Welcome and thanks for your visit! My name is Charlotte Marie Istance (formerly Charlotte Istance-Tamblin), but everyone calls me Charley.
I am a postgraduate research student working towards my PhD investigating the mechanisms of radionuclide speciation in aged cements. I completed my MChem degree at the University of Manchester in 2021 with 1st class honours. I am highly driven and intensely passionate about chemistry; my perspective as a mature student brings a great joy in studying the subject, even when the work becomes a little dry. In my masters research project I joined the Mehta group at UoM to investigate small molecule activation by FLP phosphorus Zintl clusters. This work enabled me to apply the air sensitive and analytical skills gained in the preceding years. For the 2019-20 academic year I was privileged to work at AstraZeneca as an analytical chemist. In 2019 I worked with the Mills group at the University of Manchester honing my skills in conducting air sensitive and radioactive experiments. Its detailed in "Things she does" I returned to education after realising that in my life selling mobile phones I was deeply unhappy and desperately seeking some sort of fulfilment in my life. After I returned from New Zealand it struck me that I had just achieved a handful of childhood dreams in a single trip; I’d crossed the equator and the date line, I’d also seen the Southern Cross constellation. It turns out that if you want something badly enough, you find a way to make it happen. I decided I was going back to school, I was going to go to university and study chemistry and I was going to get a PhD. Not because I thought it was a sensible well thought out plan but because I wanted to do it… deep in my heart of hearts I wanted to become Dr. Istance. That is the path I am on and that is the goal I will achieve! |
